DIY Craft Jar Herbs Kitchen Planter

Kitchen Herbs DIY Planter from re-purposed materials.Today, we take for granted the abundance of materials and supplies available  in stores. Thriving on retail sales, our economy has molded today’s disposable society, emphasizing disposal of the old and replacing with new. But, new isn’t always better.

Rummaging through a pile of old wood and organ pipes, I was able to find some unique, character-filled wood pieces that I’ve been planning on re-purposing. My favorite piece I’ve earmarked to re-purpose into a DIY planter to house kitchen herbs in craft jars.

I’ve been collecting Classico pizza sauce jars that I plan on using for this project. The petite mason jars will be the perfect complement to the old board. The labels have been removed from the jars, I’ve pulled together some old pipe strapping and screws, the only missing element for this project is assorted herbs.

As luck would have it, the local hardware store advertised a $1 clearance sale on herbs! So I hopped on my bike and picked up a basket full of herbs.

I’m so excited about this project–it’s going to look fantastic and bring some character to my kitchen. Now that I have all of the supplies that I need, it’s time to get started!

The board that I’m using for my DIY herbs kitchen planter was salvaged from an old organ pipe room. The board is labeled with organ stops and has several old screws in tact, adding to its charm.

The petite Classico mason jars are just the right size for this board. My herbs planter is going to be vertical, and I’m positioning my jars at an angle.

The best part of this project is that it is made entirely from salvaged materials. This collection of pipe clamps & strapping will be used to hold the craft jars  to the board securely.

Tin snips were used to cut the pipe clamps to length, the ends were bent with pliers, then holes drilled into the ends to accept a screw.

After pre-drilling a small hole into the wood, the screws are installed well. I want to make sure the straps are held tight so that the herbs are secure. My DIY kitchen planter is really starting to come together.

All four craft jars are securely attached. It’s time to add the plants!

Squeezing the plants into the petite craft jars was a challenge. It took a bit of fanegaling, but they look fantastic!

To ensure that my herbs don’t end up on the floor, my DIY kitchen planter was screwed directly into the wall with heavy duty toggle bolts and both the top and the bottom. Alternatively, a hanger could be fastened to the top of the board.

I’m really happy with my DIY kitchen planter. My herbs are doing well in the craft jars, and they really add a nice ambiance to the kitchen. All of my materials were salvaged–the only thing that I purchased was the herb plants, bringing the total project cost to $4! What a bargain for a unique piece!
