MNYRP January’s Homemade Dog Treats!

MNYRP January’s Homemade Dog Treats!

As part of my New Year’s Resolution Project, which involves keeping my dog healthy in 2013, I discovered a healthy dog treat that was very easy to make. This treat actually meets two of my goals.

#10 – Increase the amount of fruits and vegetables in River’s diet.

#11 – Make home cooked meals or treats for River at least once a month.

These treats only have one ingredient: Sweet Potatoes.

All you have to do is preheat your oven to 170 degrees. (This is the lowest temperature my oven would go to.) Dice a sweet potato into small cubes. I made mine about the size of a dime. Place them on a cookie sheet and put them in the oven. Cook them for about 1 ½ – 2 hours. Once they cool store them in an air tight container. I will use them as training treats or top River’s kibble with them.

I might try this idea with other vegetables. Or maybe even some fruits.

They are very healthy treats for dogs with no added sugar, preservatives or artificial anything, Just plain sweet potatoes.  I like cooking home-made foods for my dog because I can insure that they are healthy for him. No need to read labels and try to decipher scientifically described ingredients. I see exactly what is being put into his food and I don’t have to question whether his treats were made in the USA, in a clean factory or will be recalled due to…

This treat was based on a suggestion by Greg Martinez DVM on his you tube channel. To learn about more home cooked dog food ideas or animal health concerns visit his channel.

Some sources caution against feeding to many sweet potatoes because they have a lot of starch which may cause weight gain. I found this you tube video that explains the pros and cons of feeding sweet potatoes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpWNeYHzjTg

I have a passion for dog training. My Golden Retriever, River and I enjoy embarking on fun adventures! We enjoy learning new and fun dog sports and participating in doggy activities. I particularly enjoy teaching River tricks and he particularly loves anything that has to do with cookies, chasing squirrels, playing and generally having a good time. I am also an artist who enjoys painting, photography and other creative mediums.
