Merry Christmas in July!

Merry Christmas in July!

DSCF4471Every year my Church fills shoe boxes with toys and goodies for children in need. The boxes are collected by in organization called Samaritan’s Purse. This project, Operation Christmas Child, insures that children who would not otherwise receive anything for Christmas will receive a box filled with various gifts.

Operation Chrismtas Child

Interested in filling your own box for Samaritan’s Purse? First Wrap a shoe box and it’s lid in decorative Christmas paper. Then decide if you are going to shop for a boy or girl. Choose one of three age categories; 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14. Now you are ready to go shopping. Check out the Samaritan’s purse web page to find out what items are appropriate to pack. For example they ask not to include any toys that are war related including toy guns. Some items should be enclosed in a plastic bag including soap or any hard candy. It is a good idea to print out the ‘How to Pack a Shoe Box Gift‘ handout and bring it with you when you shop.

I found many items on the list at my local dollar store and 5 Below. I also found some school supplies that were on sale. This helped keep the cost of the boxes fairly low. The minimal cost will be well worth it to make children around the world really happy to get a gift on Christmas.

Samaritan’s Purse asks for a 7 dollar donation for each shoe box to help cover the cost of shipping. I discovered that I had enough for two boxes in my spare change jar.

There is the option to enclose a note, photo of yourself or family as well as your address in case the child wants to write a note back.

There is also the option to pay online and print out a special label to track your box to see where it ends up.

The final step is to secure the box with rubber bands and attach a label that says if the box is intended for a boy or a girl and what age category is appropriate.

What a fun, meaningful project to be involved in!

Check out the Samaritan’s Purse website for more information about this wonderful project.
